Welcome to the first Evercode Lab weekly crypto news digest of August!

Established financial companies moved even further into stablecoin payments and tokenized funds this week. At the same time, activity from a long-dormant Bitcoin wallet and renewed demand for XRP in South Korea drew attention back to market behavior. The clearest contrast was between confirmed infrastructure development and trading signals that still require careful interpretation.

Let’s catch up on the main updates on crypto news!

Key Takeaways:

  • Mastercard completed its acquisition of BVNK, expanding its stablecoin payment and treasury infrastructure.
  • A Bitcoin wallet inactive since 2013 moved 500 BTC worth about $31 million, drawing attention to renewed activity from dormant holders.
  • XRP saw stronger buying demand on South Korean exchanges, but the rebound has not yet confirmed a broader trend reversal.
  • BlackRock launched 12 tokenized share classes for six European money market funds, extending its tokenization strategy beyond the U.S.

Mastercard Completes Its Acquisition of BVNK

On August 3, Mastercard completed its acquisition of BVNK, a company that provides infrastructure for fiat and on-chain payments. BVNK’s technology supports movement between traditional currencies and stablecoins. Mastercard said the integration could support cross-border business payments and treasury operations.

The acquisition is complete, while the wider integration of BVNK’s technology is the next step described in the announcement.

For businesses, the deal matters because Mastercard now owns part of the infrastructure behind stablecoin payments. Stablecoins are becoming a practical payment layer for established financial companies rather than a separate crypto experiment. Seems like crypto is getting more into traditional banking, the earlier signs we covered in July Overview.

Dormant Bitcoin Wallet Moves $31 Million in Bitcoin After 12 Years

A Bitcoin wallet inactive since 2013 transferred all 500 BTC on August 3. CoinDesk valued the funds at approximately $31.3 million when it published its report the following day. The same coins were worth about $500,000 when they last moved 12.7 years earlier.

The transfer appeared alongside increased activity from other long-dormant wallets. Its timing followed a reported Coldcard security incident, although no public evidence confirms that this wallet used a Coldcard device.

A very important note to consider on market signals: crypto whale transactions attract attention because a transfer to an exchange may precede selling, while movement to a new wallet can indicate a custody change. Whale movements can change sentiment quickly, especially when several old wallets become active within the same period.

The reason for the transfer remains unknown.

South Korean Demand Interrupts XRP’s 80-Day Decline

XRP was already under considerable pressure before buyers returned. A July 29 analysis estimated that the token was around 67% below its record high and had lost 21% over the previous 90 days. Its price then remained inside a falling channel that began on May 14. Crowded leveraged positions and selling by the largest holders had also weakened support.

On August 3, XRP was still down about 2% for the day, although it had recovered roughly 4% from its August low. Buy orders placed close to the market price on Upbit and Bithumb were about twice as large as nearby sell orders. XRP also ranked third by won-denominated trading volume on Upbit.

The Korean demand interrupted the decline, but it had not confirmed a reversal. BeInCrypto identified a daily close above $1.09 as the level needed to leave the falling channel. For us, the important signal is that buyers appeared after months of weakness. Their orders still need to remain in the market for the rebound to become more than a temporary reaction.

BlackRock Brings European Money Market Fund Shares On-Chain

On August 4, BlackRock launched 12 tokenized share classes covering six existing Institutional Cash Series money market funds. The tokens are issued on Ethereum through JPMorgan’s Kinexys platform, marking BlackRock’s first tokenized fund access in Europe. The six funds managed a combined $311 billion as of June 30. That figure describes their total assets, not the amount already issued on-chain.

Each token represents a share in an existing regulated fund, while the official ownership record remains with the traditional transfer agent. Approved investors can transfer the tokens between verified wallets at any time. The underlying portfolios and legal fund structure remain unchanged.

BlackRock had already tested this model in the United States through BUIDL. It also introduced two tokenized products for stablecoin reserves shortly before the European announcement.

The new launch matters because tokenization is being added to an established institutional cash platform. The practical change concerns how fund shares can move and interact with digital collateral, rather than what the funds own.

That’s a Wrap for This Week

August opened with renewed attention on how digital assets are being integrated into traditional finance and how market participants respond to changing conditions. The latest developments point to stronger institutional involvement, while price movements and large wallet transfers remain harder to interpret.
