People used to think that crypto and blockchain were men’s worlds. But nowadays, the boundaries between men’s and women’s work or duties have long been blurred. Yet, in the crypto industry, this gender disparity is still pronounced.

The world of cryptocurrencies is full of amazing opportunities and represents a real space for self-realization! Everyone can find their place here if they are willing to invest time and energy in the development of this industry, implementing the most ambitious ideas.

On International Women’s Day, it is important to recognize the role of women in the cryptocurrency world and celebrate the wonderful achievements they have made due to their strength and dedication.

Some interesting statistics in the crypto world

Let’s turn to some statistics. Interesting fact – on January 15, 2024, Google Analytics data from Coin.Dance showed a significant gender gap in the Bitcoin community, with 85.77% of participants being men and only 14.23% women. But, while more women are using and investing in crypto, the job market tells a different story.

As of 2023, data, though limited due to market layoffs, suggests that women occupy around 26% of all roles in the crypto industry. However, leadership remains male-dominated. To confirm this fact, we can highlight that in 2023, a study by Forex Suggest has shed light on the stark gender disparity prevalent in the world of cryptocurrency, with women holding just 6 % of CEO positions in blockchain companies, compared to the 17% of CEOs in the broader technology sector.

Additionally, for 2024, there was a statistical reveal that VC investment in female-founded crypto startups doubled from the point of 3.5% of all deals to 7% of all deals.

Looking at the presented statistics, you might think that there is no place for women in the crypto market, but this is not the case! Yet it’s important to note that every year the market is transformed, including in terms of gender!

For instance, Sh. Warren, CEO of the Crypto Council for Innovation and recognized as one of Washington D.C.’s most influential women by The Washingtonian in 2023, emphasized that diversity and inclusion hold greater impact in the crypto industry compared to traditional finance.

For the geography, Asia leads with the highest percentage of female founders in crypto at 7.7%, followed by Africa at 7.4%, while North America and Europe lag at 4.8% and 6.5%, respectively. Efforts like mentorship programs, diversity policies, and targeted recruitment have contributed to greater gender balance in the fintech industry.

It is important to note that the cryptocurrency and blockchain industry is undergoing significant changes, becoming more accessible to women all around the world. This applies to both career growth and opportunities to realize your potential. Although the statistics are still small, if we compare them with the figures up to 2020, it becomes obvious that the number of women in the cryptocurrency market is steadily increasing. And we are looking forward to seeing the next big shifts in the industry!

Going beyond the numbers

Yes, it is difficult to say that women currently occupy a significant number of leading positions in the crypto, but even compared to previous years, there has been positive progress in terms of gender diversity within fintech and crypto.

As we gain a deeper understanding, it becomes clear that cryptocurrencies offer a vital and practical path toward economic prosperity for both individuals and communities. Women’s participation introduces new perspectives and strategies, strengthening problem-solving capabilities and fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration within the industry. Moreover, embracing diversity broadens the blockchain sector’s talent pool, unlocking a wider range of skills and experiences.

Nowadays, new organizations and associations are emerging to promote the unification of women, such as the Association for Women in crypto, and Women In Blockchain. These organizations help advocate for gender equality in the blockchain and Web3 industries, providing a platform for networking, mentorship, and professional growth. Moreover, they organize educational programs, workshops, and conferences to empower women with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the rapidly evolving crypto space. By fostering a supportive community, these initiatives encourage more women to participate in and shape the future of blockchain technology.
