Eleven years ago, a small group of developers flipped the switch on a network nobody could promise would work, and it&#8217;s been running ever since.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p class=\"ecl-ai-lead\">\n    Let&#8217;s look back at how it all started, and everything that&#8217;s happened since.\n  <\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"ecl-ai-section\" id=\"when-was-ethereum-created\">\n  <h2>When Was Ethereum Created?<\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    In November 2013, a 19-year-old programmer named Vitalik Buterin wrote up his vision for a blockchain that could do more than move money around, something that could run actual programs. He shared it with a small group of contacts first, then took it public in January 2014 at the North American Bitcoin Conference in Miami.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    From there, a founding team came together, Gavin Wood, Charles Hoskinson, Anthony Di Iorio, Mihai Alisie, and Joseph Lubin among them, and they needed funding to actually build it. In mid-2014, they ran a public crowdfunding campaign, and the response was real. Roughly 31,000 BTC came in, <a href=\"https:\/\/ethereum.org\/ethereum-history-founder-and-ownership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">worth about $18 million at the time,<\/a> enough to fund a year of development.\n  <\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"ecl-ai-section\" id=\"the-ethereum-genesis-block\">\n  <h2>The Ethereum Genesis Block<\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    On July 30, 2015, at 3:26 PM UTC, Ethereum&#8217;s very first block was mined. The actual birthday that we celebrate each year, the moment the network stopped being a whitepaper.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    The release was called Frontier, and it was about as bare-bones as a launch gets. Ethereum moved from proof-of-work, the energy-intensive mining model it launched with, to proof-of-stake, cutting the network&#8217;s energy use by <a href=\"https:\/\/ethereum.org\/roadmap\/merge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">over 99%<\/a> almost overnight. It&#8217;s still one of the largest live infrastructure changes any major blockchain has ever pulled off without missing a beat.\n  <\/p>\n\n  <p>\n    Since then, the upgrades haven&#8217;t stopped. <a href=\"https:\/\/evercodelab.com\/blog\/fusaka-upgrade-on-ethereum-what-it-means-for-the-future-of-layer-2-and-institutional-staking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fusaka<\/a>, Ethereum&#8217;s most recent major upgrade, went live on December 3, 2025, continuing the network&#8217;s steady push toward more scalability and lower costs. Eleven years later, Ethereum remains a project in active development, which shows a clear testament to the seriousness and care with which its creators approach it.\n  <\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n<section class=\"ecl-ai-section\" id=\"where-ethereum-stands-at-11\">\n  <h2>Where Ethereum Stands at 11<\/h2>\n\n  <p>\n    Eleven years in, Ethereum is arguably in one of its stronger stretches yet.
