We\u2019re sure you are familiar with Ethereum, a blockchain network that lets people create and run smart<\/strong> contracts<\/strong> and decentralized apps (dApps)<\/strong> without relying on middlemen like banks or companies. Vitalik Buterin<\/strong> and his team launched Ethereum in 2015 to make blockchain more than just a way to send money. It allows developers to build automated financial services, games, and other apps that run independently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And as expected, every big network needs to be updated. The Ethereum Pectra upgrade is scheduled for March and will introduce significant technical improvements to the network. In this article, we will share a short story behind this upcoming update, cover some improvements Pectra will bring for Ethereum network users, and outline why it is important for the whole industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the Pectra upgrade<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As the network was launched in 2015, Ethereum has presented around 20 major upgrades to the blockchain. These upgrades implement the so-called \u201cEthereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs)<\/em><\/strong>\u201d, and their role is to ensure that the blockchain’s weaknesses are continuously addressed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The timeline behind Pectra<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A major milestone in Ethereum\u2019s evolution was the Paris Upgrade<\/strong> in 2022, widely known as \u201cThe Merge\u201d<\/strong>. This hard fork marked Ethereum\u2019s transition from a Proof of Work (PoW) to a Proof of Stake (PoS) <\/strong>consensus mechanism. Since then, investors have been able to stake their ETH and earn rewards<\/strong>, making staking a core feature of the network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pectra’s development began in November<\/strong> 2023. It was<\/strong> originally planned as a small-scale<\/strong> upgrade<\/strong> that could launch alongside Dencun, <\/strong>a series of upgrades to the blockchain that took place in March 2024, within the same year. However, as Ethereum developers navigated various competing<\/strong> priorities<\/strong> within the protocol and its growing ecosystem, the scope of Pectra expanded significantly<\/strong>, leading to a more complex and impactful update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By August<\/strong> 2024<\/strong>, the Pectra upgrade had become one<\/strong> of<\/strong> the<\/strong> most<\/strong> extensive<\/strong> in<\/strong> Ethereum\u2019s<\/strong> history<\/strong>, based on the sheer number of Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) it incorporated. Due to its growing complexity, developers made the strategic decision to split<\/strong> the<\/strong> upgrade<\/strong> into<\/strong> two<\/strong> phases:<\/strong> Prague<\/strong> and<\/strong> Electra. <\/strong>This ensured a more manageable implementation process while addressing potential risks and challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
